Galangal is perhaps the most mysterious ingredient of Black Salve Virus Healing Compound. But it's not uncommon. In fact its various forms are used by millions of Asians everyday in cooking, as well as in Jamu, or traditional medicine.
The name Galangal is more generic than specific. And not unlike with purveyors of ginseng and the like, is often used to mislead the user/maker/buyer into purchasing ready-made product, simply in avoidance of confusion. The trick is to decide which form of Galangal is the most beneficial in the appropriate treatment.
Galangal is a generic name that often describes several varieties of the ginger root families Zingiberaceae), haling from Southeast Asia, all of which grow in Indonesia. Most forms of ginger posses anti-cancer qualities, to varying degrees and qualifications.
Even ginger root, widely available in supermarkets, can be used, but with milder, slower results. Ginger root is considered a universal "cure-all" by the Hindu sect Ananda Marga.
Generally speaking these various Galangal resemble or are related to ginger but taste little like common ginger. They are available live, dried, or powdered. We prefer to use live roots, sun-dry, them, then pulverize them into powder. Powdered root is the easiest and most effective way to combine it with Zinc and Bloodroot in the preparation of Black Salve, in all its forms.
The word galangal, or galanga in Indonesian, is a common name for all members of the genus Alpinia. And in everyday usage, it can also refer to at least nine plants of zingiberaceae/ ginger family, all listed below.
All of them display similar qualities, including some with pronounced anti-cancer properties. Different roots possess differing healing characteristics, flavors, aromas. All are used in culinary flavor and folk medicine, and in the production of standardized western medicine as well.
In addition to its inclusion in Black Salve compounds, it can also be added, in larger quantities, to food. Most of these make wonderful teas, mixed with lemon and honey. Effective in smaller doses for westerners, larger doses might be needed for those who cook with ginger roots on a daily basis. The most important addition to foods, in terms of over all healing qualities, might be turmeric.
Latin and common names for a variety of roots known as Galangal, all sub-genus of Zingiberaceae: Ginger family.

Listed below are some of the Zingiberaceae roots that may be used in Black Salve preparations.
1)Alpinia galanga Zingiberaceae:
Laos or Lengkuas,
Greater Galangal,
Logosa
Chewing John,
Little John.
Even this most famous of the galangal family is fraught with confusion. In Indonesia, both greater and lesser galangal are called laos and lengkuas. We prefer to call this type of ginger greater galangal, alpina galanga, laos, and lengkuas.
Laos or lengkuas is mostly used as a spice in Javanese and Thai cooking, and available in most street markets. Often used in American folk medicine. It is said to act as an aphrodisiac, and a stimulant. Lengkuas contains a flavinol called Galangin.
The laos/ lengkuas root is characterized by citrus, earthy aroma, with hints of pine and soap in the flavor. Its pinkish skin supports concentric rings and multiple narrow shoots from each root. Thin finger roots feed the main tuber. Laos works in Black Salve, but is not the most potent form of Galangal.

Note multiple shoots. It grows in long, thin tubers, near the
surface.

2) Alpinia Officinarum Zingiberaceae:
The true lesser galangal (long stem).
Also known as languas officinarum,
radix galanga minoris,
galanga,
Chinese ginger,
China root,
east Indian ginger,
east India catarrh root,
east India root,
galingale,
gargaut,
India root,
colic root,
ingwer,
pieni galanganjuuri.
Often confused with Kaempferia Galanga, further below.
Alpinia officinarum zingiberaceae is known more for curing toothache, bad breath, headache. For men it may help as a perineal relaxer, for shrinking of hemorrhoids, and for relaxing a stressed abdomen. Also known as an effective anti-oxidant.
Adpated from: Medical Plants, Chemistry and Properties. M. Daniel.
A native of China, alpinia officinarum is a perennial herb with thick, creeping reddish-brown rhizomes, lanceolate acuminate ornamental leaves and showy white flowers in racmes.
The constituents of the rhizome, the drug, are a volatile oil and flavonoids. The volitile oil, amounting to 1%, consists of 1,8-cineole, a-pinene, b-pinene, methyl cinnamate, etc.
Flavinoids reported are about 14, including quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, galangin, and 3-OMe galangin.
Lesser galangal is used as a spice and carminative.

3)
Kaempferia galanga zingiberaceae:
kencur.
sand ginger,
aromatic ginger,
resurrection lily (no stem).
Often confused with aAlpinia officinarum, above.
NOT LESSER GALANGAL, but often so-called in Indonesia.
Kencur is most likely the more common zingiberaceae used in Black Salve combination, though it is often confused with Laos and Lengkuas above. When asking for galangal in a market, or a supplier, this particular variety may not be offered.

4)
Boesenbergia Pandurata Zingiberaceae:
Fingerroot.
kaempferia pandurata,
boesenbergia rotunda,
temu kunci,
Chinese ginger,
krachai

Fingerroot has been demonstrated useful in AIDS and HIV treatments. Also a good antioxidant, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, chemo-preventive, and therapeutic agent against prostate and other cancers. Relieves flatulence and indigestion. Strengthens energy and stimulates nerves.
Contains the alkaloids:
(none are considered toxic if consumed daily)
pinostrobin
alpinetin
boesenbergin A
boesenbergin B
panduratin A
methoxychalcone
cardamonin
pinostrobin
pinocembrin
and more....
Several biological functions of the components of fingerroot have also been revealed. For example, Murakami et al. found that an extract of fingerroot exhibited in vitro antitumor-promoting activity by the tumor promoter-induced Epstein-Barr virus activation assay, and the active principle was identified as cardamonin.
A methanolic extract of rhizomes of fingerroot showed
a strong antimutagenic effect toward Trp-P-1 in the
Ames test. The methanolic extract contained at least
six active compounds that were suspected to be chalcones
and flavanones on the basis of their UV absorption
spectra and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry.

5) Kaempferiae Rotundae Rhizoma Zingiberaceae:
Kunyit Putih
zedoary,
kunci pepet,
temu rapet,
ardong (Java),
kunir putih (Sunda).
kacōramu (Telugu),
konce pet (Madura),
temu putri (Bali),
temu putih,
temu rapet (Java),
Rimpang
A very popular spice, if has as many names as it does uses and dishes. Bitter and cold nature, its nutritious and anti-inflammatory, carminative, and speeds-up wound healing.
Kuynyit putih was introduced to Europe by Arabs around the sixth century, but its use as a spice in the West today is extremely rare, having been replaced by ginger. The fragrant plant bears yellow flowers with red and green bracts and the underground stem section is large and tuberous with numerous branches. The leaf shoots of the zedoary are long and can reach 1 meter (3 feet) in height.
The edible root of kunyit putih has a white interior and a fragrance reminiscent of mango; however, its flavor is more similar to ginger, except with a very bitter aftertaste. In Indonesia it is ground to a powder and added to curry pastes, whereas in India it tends to be used fresh or pickled.
Kunyit putih is also used in some traditional eastern medicines where it is reputed to be an aid to digestion, a relief for colic and an agent for purifying the blood. The essential oil produced from the dried roots is used in perfumery and soap fabrication, as well as an ingredient in bitter tonics. Kunyit Putih is also used in traditional Jamu medicine, and as a pungent spice in Javanese and Balinese cooking. It's characterized by white flesh and widely-spaced concentric rings. Kunyit putih is used widely in combination with Indonesian cancer treatments.
Kunyit putih live root.
Kunyit putih at three months growth, during dry season.
Kunyit putih is difficult to grow during dry season. A recent volcanic eruption from Java caused some mottling of the leaves, downwind, here in Bali. Natural acid rain brings both soil nutrition and damage.

6) Curcumae Rhizoma Zingiberaceae:
Temu Lawak,
koneng gede,
temo labak.
Temu Lawak is one of at least three varieties of cumin. All three come in differing shades of yellow.
It can serve as: Emenagogue, Laktagogue, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, analgesic, cholesterol regulator, hepatoprotector, antibacterial, etc.
Temu Lawak is used in traditional Javanese medicine to cure many forms of cancer. Its antibacterial qualities effectively treat many skin disorders, including acne and eczema. Its also known for improving and healing asthma, diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, and in controlling stroke and epilepsy.
Temu Lawak is an "emenagog" and an antioxidant. It strengthens the pancreas and increases stamina. The list is long, especially when combined with other agents. Our best reference on the subject is a pamphlet book: "Penyembuhan dengan Temu Laway", by Professor H.M. Hembing Wijayakusuma. Milenia Popular Books, Jakarta. The text is in Bahasa Indonesia.
