1) Introduction:
T According Chemicalland21.com,
zinc is an essential mineral having a role in
the maintenance of the body's nervous and immune system (T-cell function).
Zinc maintains the body's alkaline
balance.
Zinc is an essential element, necessary for sustaining all life. It is estimated that 3000 of the hundreds of thousands of proteins in the human body contain zinc.
Eyesight, taste, smell and memory are also connected with zinc.
Brain development is stunted by zinc insufficiency in utero and in youth.
Zinc is involved in the biochemical
reactions as an antioxidant in the healing process, helping to develop normal
tissue.
Zinc deficiencies may result in prolonged wound susceptibility
to infections.
Obtaining a sufficient zinc intake during pregnancy and in young children is a very real problem, especially among those who cannot afford a good supply of meat and a varied diet.
There is zinc in semen. As much as 0.25 milligram of zinc will be found in 1 mL of seminal fluid.
Ionic zinc is a potent antimicrobial, used since 2500 BC in topical creams. Calomine lotion, diaper creams, and dandruff treatments are just some of the common antimicrobial applications. At low concentrations, zinc ions promote wound healing. Zinc ions also directly stimulate zinc receptors on skin cells, promoting wound healing. 2) Zinc -
Various forms and Uses: * Pure Zinc is part of an effective treatment for
age-related macular degeneration in some cases. C) Zinc in Black Salve Topical Compound: 1) The form of zinc we prefer to use, in combination with the
roots galangal and bloodroot, is zinc chloride. The following was adapted from Chest
of Books, a link to the Zinc Chloride page.
And also adapted from the "Dental Medicine. A Manual Of Dental Materia Medica And Therapeutics", by Ferdinand J. S.
Gorgas.
Zinc chloride can be used internally in
in cure of chorea, epilepsy, neuralgia, and scrofula. It can also be combined with hydrocyanic acid,
for use in facial neuralgia. Externally, zinc chloride is applied to malignant growths, gonorrhea,
and indolent ulcers. A solution is sometimes used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.
From this we can how one need not fear infection while using Black Salve
externally.
Zinc
Chloride is derived by the action of hydrochloric acid on granulated (pure)
zinc. Then this solution is later purified by a solution of chlorine and carbonate of zinc when it is evaporated till it assumes a solid form.
It is in the form of a white deliquescent salt, freely soluble in water, alcohol and ether, as soft as wax and capable of being melted and sublimed by heat. As it rapidly deliquesces when exposed to the air, it should be kept in
glass-stoppered bottles. It has a styptic, metallic taste, which is very disagreeable. It is also a useful antiseptic, deodorizer and disinfectant, and largely diluted has been employed as a nervine tonic ; but as the milder preparations of zinc answer the same purpose, it is rarely employed internally.
On account of the great affinity for water and its power of combination with
albumen, chloride of zinc penetrates and spreads deeply, and produces an eschar which is white, thick and
hard. When applied to malignant and indolent ulcers, it promotes healthy granulations, and also when topically applied it not only destroys the diseased structure, but excites a new and healthy action in the surrounding
parts.
Chloride of zinc is a valuable agent in dental practice, being employed as an external application to sensitive dentine. As an obtunding agent, a drop of the deliquescent chloride is placed in contact with the sensitive dentinal surface (which has previously been dried and is protected from all moisture), and allowed to remain from two to four minutes. Considerable pain follows the application of the chloride, which is of a steady continuous character, without the throbbing nature which characterizes the pain of an irritated dental pulp.
Its painful action may be modified by bathing the sensitive surface, prior to the application of the chloride, with chloroform, tincture of aconite or atropine solution, or a combination made. When the pain has subsided, the excavation of the cavity can be pro-ceded with until the layer of dentine affected by the chloride has been removed, when another application may be necessary.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Anhydrous zinc chloride hydrolyzes with moisture to form hydrochloric acid. It also forms
complex ions with water, ammonia and some organic solvents. Alkaline materials precipitate
zinc hydroxide from zinc chloride solutions. The first few
times Black Salve is taken orally, the patient usually uses

to the body, without long term digestive effect. From Biological role: Encyclopedia II

The direct effect of zinc (as in lozenges) on bacteria and viruses is also well-established, and has been used since at least 2000 BC, from when zinc salts in palliative salves are documented. However, exactly how to deliver zinc salts against pathogens without injuring one's own tissues is still being investigated.

4) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS,
Do not take it internally. Avoid inhaling mist,
Keep container closed. Use with adequate ventilation.
Wash thoroughly after handling.
Exposure of the eyes and skin can be minimized by wearing chemical safety goggles and rubber
gloves.
Additional protective equipment, such as transparent face shield, rubber gauntlets, rubber
pants and jacket, and rubber shoes may be desirable where there is a high probability of contact
with concentrated solutions of zinc chloride.
In the event of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Call a physician.
Wash clothing before reuse.
If inhaled, remove to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably
mouth to mouth. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Call a physician.
If swallowed, give large quantities of water or milk. Do not induce vomiting. Call a physician. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
In over-doses it causes a burning pain in the throat and stomach, nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, decrease of pulse, cramps of the limbs, etc., being a powerful irritant poison. The antidotes in poisoning by zinc salts are albumen, carbonate of soda, magnesia and soap.
The principal hazard is to the
eye, since even brief contact with zinc chloride in water may produce permanent damage. Deaths,
The U.S. Department of Labor has ruled that an employee's exposure to zinc chloride fumes in any
In Black Salve Topical Compound, we use Zinc Chloride.
In Black Salve Oral B Solution, we
use Pure Zinc powder.
Zinc is the fourth most common metal in use, trailing only iron, aluminum, and
copper in annual production.
Signs of zinc deficiency includes hair loss, skin lesions, diarrhea, wasting of body
tissues. Prolonged lack of zinc can result in death.
Zinc salts are effective against pathogens in direct application. Gastrointestinal infections are also strongly attenuated by ingestion of zinc, and this effect could be due to direct
anti-microbial action of the zinc ions in the GI tract, or to absorption of the zinc and re-release from immune cells (all granulocytes secrete zinc) or both.
The best and most abundant natural food source of zinc is oysters, although these bottom scavengers also accumulate toxic metals. Zinc is found in most animal proteins such as beef, pork and poultry. Other food sources of zinc include beans, nuts, whole grains, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.

A few industrial uses for various forms of zinc:
* Zinc Sulfide is used in luminescent pigments such as on the hands of clocks
and other items that glow in the dark.
* Zinc Methyl (Zn(CH3)2) is used in a number of organic syntheses.
* Zinc Stearate is a lubricative plastic additive.
Zinc is used in alloys such as brass, nickeled silver, typewriter metal,
various soldering formulas and German silver.
Zinc is the primary metal used in making American pennies since 1982.
Zinc is used in die casting notably in the automobile industry.
Zinc is used as part of the containers of batteries.
Zinc is one of the three main ingredients, comprising half of the
healing compound known as "Black Salve." Its use in Black Salve
Topical Compound, may have originated as a dental application.

Medical Properties And Action
Chloride of zinc is the most active of the zinc preparations, being a powerful and penetrating
escharotic. Its local action as a caustic depends upon its affinity for albumen and gelatin, and when in contact with living parts it destroys their vitality, and uniting with the albuminous and gelatinous matters present, forms an
eschar.
Chloride of zinc is also employed to arrest superficial hemorrhage from a wound of the gum during the filling of teeth;
it will also temporarily arrest the secretion of mucus from the surface of the mucous membrane of the mouth.
Chloride of zinc in a properly diluted form is an efficient disinfectant, and has been employed for such a purpose in gangrenous conditions of the mouth.

ZINC CHLORIDE
Granular Solid and Aqueous Solutions
Zinc Chloride is a white deliquescent salt that forms acidic solutions in water and in polar organic
solvents such as ethanol, acetone and ether. Neutral solutions can be prepared with anhydrous
zinc chloride and acetone. Zinc chloride is available from Zaclon LLC as a granular solid, or in the
form of aqueous solutions ranging in concentration from 50 to 70%. Solution color is water white to
a straw color.
STORAGE AND HANDLING
Granular zinc chloride should be stored, tightly closed, in a warm 10-24 oC (50-75F) dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Because anhydrous zinc chloride readily absorbs
moisture, an inventory turnover rate of about 2-3 months is recommended to minimize the
possibility of caking.
MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION
Caution should be exercised in selecting materials for use with zinc chlorides. Steel tanks are not
satisfactory for storage of zinc chloride solutions. For storage at normal temperatures, rubber-lined
steel tanks or fiberglass-reinforced polyester tanks are recommended. Small polyethylene or
polypropylene tanks can also be used.
